Kayak Safety Tips

While the weather is nice, both novice and experienced kayakers are hitting the water. Regardless of skill level, you should know these basic safety tips before packing up your kayak trailer. By following and remembering these basic safety lessons, you can be prepared and stay safe. Most importantly, you can enjoy kayaking.

First, you should always ensure you have the proper equipment. In your vehicle, or if your kayak trailer has storage, keep a first aid kit. You should also have a couple emergency bottles of water and of course, your life jackets. Always wear a life jacket, no matter how calm the waters are or how experienced you are. Additionally, be sure you are wearing the right clothing for the weather. Being overly warm or cold can mean big trouble later. You can always pack additional clothes for the drive home in your kayak trailer.

Next, be sure the area you’re kayaking in matches your skill levels. Check to see how rough the currents are, as well as weather conditions before venturing out. A good rule is if you don’t feel comfortable swimming in the conditions, you shouldn’t kayak. If you aren’t sure, many state and national parks have rangers that you can talk to. As long as you’re aware of conditions, wildlife, and the weather you can stay safe while kayaking.

Finally, you should always kayak with a buddy. Again, experience doesn’t matter here. A buddy can help you get out of a rough situation or get help if the situations arise. You can also signal more assistance with a whistle, which you should keep on your life vest. Another general rule is that you should stick close to shore when kayaking. Not only will you be in a more populated area, but you can avoid boats and other watercraft that may be sharing the water.

There are other safety rules that you should definitely follow, but these are three that regardless of situation should help. Be sure you have everything you need in your vehicle or your kayak trailer before you leave to avoid unnecessary problems.
